Uncleaned Ancient Roman

What is the best way clean uncleaned ancient roman coins without damaging the patina?
I'm just getting into the hobby of cleaning roman coins and I'm trying to gather all possible method before I choose which method to use.
One method is to put them in extra virgin olive oil and soak them. This however is a very slow way but does cause the least damage. Boiling the coins in distilled water gets rid of some of the grime. For really encrusted Chinese cash coins I boil them in a mixture of white vinegar and distilled water. The less vinegar the less reaction and damage. Then I soak in distilled water and baking soda to stop the acid action. Then rinse in distilled water and pat dry. Sometimes I need my dremel motor tool, this of course needs to be used with great care but it is the only way to get the heavy patina off so I can read the characters. Hope this helps.
