Ahar Museum– A Showcase of Vanished Civilizations
The ancient city of Udaipur in Andhra Pradesh, India is most well-known for its architectural legacy of the bygone Rajput Kingdom, which holds the reputation of never having been seceded to the Mughals. Adorned with magnificent abodes of long-vanished nobility, palaces and beautiful temple complexes, Udaipur appears as a city that proudly wears the remnants of its past glories.
Ahar is a town that appears within close proximity to Udaipur. A site whose most ancient ruins are believed to date back to the Harappan settlements, this town has long fascinated archeologists and historians. The city is also believed to have been the ancient capital of the Mewar kingdom and residential abode of the Sisodias, who were the predecessors of the later Rajput rulers.
Among the archeological treasures unearthed is evidence of a Chalcolithic civilization (the transitional period between the Neolithic and Bronze Ages) dating back almost 4000 years. Among the myriad of other ancient temples and artwork found here, four Jain temples with exquisite carvings emerge as proof of the town once having been a very active hub of the Jain community a thousand years ago.
The more mobile and carefully preserved relics unearthed by excavations are stored for public display at Ahar's Archeological Museum. A magnificent effigy of the sun god Surya, a metallic Buddha statue and the medieval statue of Lord Vishnu flanked by snakes are some of the of the most beautiful examples of the 10th century sculptures housed here, along with other indicators of a forgotten lifestyle such as skin scrubbers, animal images, stone weights and seals. The terracotta toy and pottery display is dominated by a large earthenware pot. The image of a Jain ford maker crafted in metal takes prominence in the exhibit showcasing Hindu and Jain icons.
However, the Museum's display of Mewarian royal memorials and cenotaphs are indubitably its main attraction. At least nineteen cenotaphs honouring the great Maharanas of Udaipur are found here, including the cenotaph of the famous Rajput monarch Amar Singh, son of the great Rajput warrior Rana Pratap Singh and who signed the peace treaty with the Mughals which was instrumental in securing the freedom of Mewar from Mughal rule.
Housing some of the most fascinating relics of the region's long-spun history, visitors to Udaipur cannot consider their exploration of this Rajput stronghold complete without a visit to the Ahar Museum. The temples and museum of Ahar can be most comprehensively explored from the vantage point of a quality Udaipur hotel. The Leela Palace Kempinski Udaipur is a well-regarded luxury hotel Rajasthan, which attempts to recreate the beauty and comfort of the Rajput princes for its guests.
