Do You Know the Variants of O-ring?

(1)    X-ring

This seal ring has four lips. Its sealing principle is similar to O-ring. It is a kind of circular ring without juncture and its section is square-shaped. The X-ring is quite similar to O-ring in the following aspects such as usage and function. However, its sealability is better than O-ring. Generally speaking, this ring is often made of all kinds of synthetic rubber. the X-ring is mainly used in the dynamic seal. It is certainly applied in the static seal. It is applicable for the alternating motion of the plug, cylinder rod and plunger piston. Sometimes it is also suitable for the rotating axis or swinging spindle. In the normal situation, the working pressure can not surpass 40MPa, the working speed must be less than 0.5m/s and the working temperature ranges from -60 Celsius degree to 200 Celsius degree. Besides, the surface of the X-ring should be dealt and thus it can get better frictional property.

X-ring is a kind of seal rings whose sealability depends on the media's pressure and force. As for the radial force and axial force of the seal ring, they are closely related with the working pressure of the system. When the pressure is raised, the decrement of the seal ring will be correspondingly increased and the contact stress also will be increased.

Therefore, compared with the O-ring, the X-ring has the following unique merits. First, when it is used in the alternating motion, it will not be overturned and also will not be twisted. Second, because the required radial decrement is reduced, the contact stress is small and the frictional force is also small. Third, owing to its even contact force, the leakage is very small. Fourth, when the X-ring is applied in the dynamic seal, its sealing effectiveness is better than O-ring and its service life is also longer than O-ring. Especially in the occasion with low speed, the X-ring can replace the O-ring and its sealability is more obvious.

(2) other extrusion seal rings

What comes first is the D-ring. Basically speaking, D-ring is a kind of O-ring. The main difference is that the base of the D-ring is square-shaped. Because this D-ring provides a relatively big contact area in the base, it can eliminate the possibility of distorting actual effect. Its frictional is similar to that of the O-ring. It is not easily twisted. However, under high pressure, its section is easily deformed. In order to suit the high pressure environment, the check ring should be used. This ring can be applicable for the alternating motion seal or some places where the O-ring can not be suitable.

Next, it is the common ring with triangle section. This ring provides the very good contact area in the groove in order to keep the stability. Besides, its frictional contact area is very small. Although its frictional force is tiny, its rated pressure is quite low if it does not adopt the check ring. Compared with the O-ring, this seal ring is more stable.
