You can see than in the last months, there are more and more articles about "pre workout supplements", "best pre workout supplements", intra workout products".
There are some people sharing valuable information about this. Some of them even share their experience and researches. However most of them just run after ranking in google.
From what i've seen, the most valuable reviews are those from experienced weight lifters and from those willing to research and try the supplements for months.
You may be seduced to listen to any "hardcore" review about best supplements. Reviews given by "no brain" lifters. Most of them know very well how to criticize, but have nothing good to say about anything. There many online review on online shops. These reviews can by very useful if you know to recognize a honest person. Remember that not all reviews submitted by any visitor or member of a shop or forum is honest. As you may already know, there are people willing to criticize or to praise a product for a few bucks.
Let's take a look at some most used ingredients for pre workout supplements.
Creatine: is one of the most highly appreciated supplement for athletes(bodybuilders, runners, football players, etc). Creatine is a source of fast energy for muscles, provide muscle cel columization. Also has anabolic and anti-catabolic effect.

Arginine: A grate nitric oxide source that helps muscle volumization and cardiovascular health. Most pre workout supplements use arginine, for the tremendous pumping and vascularization power. Being a vasodilator it helps with erections. Recomended dose is around 5-10grams per day. It should by avoided by those predisposed to herpetic eruptions.
BCAA - Long chained amino acids. Another great supplement. If you are a bodybuilder or a performance athlete you have heard about this one, as you have heard about creatine. BCAA amino-acids are most used for their property to increase energy level, endurance and muscle tissue recovery. BCAA can increase muscle mass and can have a powerful anti-catabolic effect. Usually doses are from 5grams to 10-20 grams per day. BCAA power is really seen by those on a moderate-low carb diet and using around 20gr per day. Best time to consume it is before training.
Caffeine: It forces the body to produce energy. One of the most popular stimulants. This stimulates the central nervous system. Some like the powerful energy effect. Also caffeine give you more strength for those low repetition sets. There are several forms of it used. Anhydrous caffeine is one of the most potent and aggressive. Yerba mate caffeine is more gentle with you body and it's effect is more temperated. Limit the use of caffeine to 200-250mg per day.
Choosing you pre workout supplement/supplements
You can either choose a product with almost all that you need before training or you can make your own blend.
Making your own blend may take a few minutes, but it can have advantages. Buying all the ingredients that you need in larger quantities will make the price of one serving very low. Also buying every supplements separately gives you the opportunity to get the best ingredients. Making your own recipe, as said can have the following advantages: lower price/serving/gram of ingredient, you can buy the best ingredients(purity, effects), you can use the proven quantity or the quantity that is most useful for your body, you can always change your recipe(adding, changing or removing ingredients).
Using a pre-made product it's better especially if you don't want to waste your time combining all the ingredients every time. Also if you choose your before workout supplement wisely, you can benefit of some of the most advanced formulas and ingredients that in some cases you can't find it elsewhere.
