The Value And Meaning Of Ceremony
Nicholas wore a crisp white shirt and tie, his hair was freshly cut, and he was very nervous. At 13 he didn't want to hang on to his mom's hand, not manly, so henstood apart from the gathering, shifting from one foot to another, chewing his lip.
He had been given a job to do at his grandmother's funeral. She died before her 98th birthday after a long and rich life.
Nicholas' job was to grant her wish, very clear for she was a direct woman, that her wedding ring be placed on her urn before it was sealed. The moment arrived: I invited him to step forward and handed him a small silk bag containing the thin ring. He was instantly transformed into a young man performing an important mission, spine straight, eyes clear, breathing steady, as he walked 10 steps to the bronze urn containing his grandmother's ashes and placed it tenderly on top. He then turned, an expression of accomplishment on his handsome face, and sat down between his mother and father, and relaxed, taking their hands into his.
This ceremony within a ceremony honoring a completion, an ending, and a rite of passage for a 13-year old boy.

An old Russian woman attended the wedding of her granddaughter. The bride was Russian, the groom from Mexico. Their families were distinctively different. No question who belonged to whom. There was love, excitement, and anxiety as both families encountered up close and personal another tribe.
After the vows, Grandmother stepped forward carrying a very large tray, with an embroidered cloth covering a magnificent loaf of bread she had baked, at least 2 feet long, with a glaze that shone like a diamond. Manuel & Yulia each broke a piece from the beautiful loaf and fed each other. It was a tradition honored, a moment that radiated throughout both families.
There was an almost palpable sigh of relief from the gathering. They were not two separate tribes any longer, but, because of the love of a son and daughter, had become a single community.
These two ceremonial rituals, one honoring a completion, the other filled with the hope of new beginnings, united the old and the new with the act of a simple ritual. The rich feeling evoked in all who were present was palpable, and lasting.
As a Celebrant I have the opportunity in my own way to help restore the value and meaning of ceremony and ritual in our lives. I have watched with concern how our rituals have changed and, sometimes, degraded as the complexity of modern life extracts its price for survival and success. Even the word ritual, once evocative of something rich, deep and meaningful, is now often associated with that which simply routine.
Each of us attends weddings, funerals and other events in our own families and communities. And, each of us has, too often, left feeling as though a potentially beautiful moment had been stripped of feeling, was superficial, or barren. This trend is apparent to me on both a personal and social level.
An important rite of passage should be nourished by the life-giving role of meaningful ritual. When the ceremonial space is opened, it can be filled with a joyful soulfulness that can refresh the spirit, revitalize the psyche, and renew the lives of all who participate. It can happen in a funeral as naturally as it can happen in a wedding.
But, it can only happen when the intention is present to honor the moment, which often asks of us to turn off our cells (not even vibrate!), breathe deeply with gratitude that we still can, and give our attention to the beauty of the human journey, honored in special moments that we're lucky enough to savor.
