Greece - Home to Academic Giants
The history of civilization as we know it is not complete without the mention of Greece.
It is actually the mother of scientific means of thoughts, observation and development of theory to get started. It is the first argument to oppose the previous belief that things were controlled by supernatural powers. The brains behind scientific thinking are Thales, Democratus and Anaximander. Mathematics was also an area of strength, that to date people still apply in a number of formulae - dating back to Ancient Greece.
Talk of philosophy and Greece is a world ahead. Plato, Socrates and Aristotle are all ancestors of Greece. Hippocratic Oath, a compulsory oath for medical practitioners is named after a Greek medical guru. Hippocrates is the father of medicine in Europe and the Middle East for a long time. Herophilos and Paulas Aegineta pioneered anatomical study. Padanius Dioscorides was a star in pharmacology – and the list goes on and on.
Phy thogoras theorem, algebra Diophantus, Eliecude, Elestrothenes and Archimedes are some of many other contributors in the world of Mathematics, Geography and other disciplines.
Make no mistake to think that, although Greece today is very quiet, there is little to be proud of. Greeks still make a great contribution to science and technology. Finite element analysis and direct stiffness methods is the work of John Argyris. Constantine contributed real analysis. Albert Einstein was behind the theory of relativity. Actually the list is endless.
The foreign language Greek, forms the official language of over 15 million in Hellenic Republic. It is a language that developed from Mycenaean Greek and Linear B script that was alive during the prehistoric era - later linear script, of the Minoan civilization. It gained from Cypriot syllabary, and later added dialects of Ancient Greek. In short, the whole Greek language has a history of over 3000 years of written record. Greek language learning is sometimes thought to be difficult.
The ancient Greece has a rich history but unfortunately not much remains of hard art. Time took its toll and major items never got to live like the nagging professors' works. There are however a few sculptures, coins and pottery that remain, representing the past.
Contemporary Greeks majorly subscribe to Christian faith. Greek Orthodox Church has had a rich background and has great influence in Greek cultural development. There is also Church of Greece but whose influence continues to decline. There are also other faiths which form minority groups. Muslim in particular, has an estimated population of about 150,000.
Music is another form of entertainment and its history is also extensive. Liturgical tones which are religious existed from ancient times -these influenced the Roman Empire. Secular chants on the other hand had a great influence on the Renaissance. Current Greek music bears elements of those ancient tones added to Middle East imported tunes.
In a nutshell, Greece has influenced in every aspect of our life. The medicine you take, the calculations you make and even the buildings that are built, have to borrow from the major contributions made over time by Greek thinkers. They are a people that spent a lot of time researching and building upon discoveries that were later to be of help to mankind. It is not only military prowess that can make a nation of heroes. Greeks should be emulated by many if the world is to improve.
