Trout Fishing Lures – The Spinnerbait on the Move

Spinnerbait is a fishing lure that can spin by the means of one or several metal blades. These blades rotate as a propeller making the lures to create various degrees of movement and flash that resembles a small fish. Spinnerbaits are the most common used lures which are available in many types designed to meet various fishing conditions and techniques.

A spinnerbait consists of two important functional parts which is the hook and the blade(s). Since the function of the hook has been known already, further discussion will be focusing on the blade which plays a significant role in a spinnerbait. There are various shapes of blade that may produce different spinning speeds.

Aside from the shape, there are plenty of sizes with various coloring like gold, silver, bronze and painted blades of numerous pattern and color combination. Two major features of a spinnerbait are the vibration and flash. The vibration is the pounding of the blade as it rotates, while flash is the light reflection generated by the movement of the blades. There are blades that generates more flash and others produce more vibration.  There are four well-known blade types as follows:

The Colorado blade. This is a round spoon shaped blade which is used to produce maximum vibration. It possesses a broad shape with a parabolic cross section which is able to produce a deep and strong vibration to attract the attention of a fish from quite a long distance. This type of blade is preferred when facing a situation where the fish is not able to set eyes on the lure like muddy water or when night fishing.

The Willow Leaf Blade. This is a long narrow-shaped blade like a willow leaf. It's cross section is almost flat and generate more flash rather than vibration which can be ignored due to its very small movement. This type is preferred in situation where the fish has a clear vision to see the blade flash when the lure makes some movement. This Willow Leaf blade is usually used in a tandem with the Colorado blade in what is called the safety-pin spinner bait configuration.

The Indiana Blade. This is a mixture of the Colorado blade and the Willow Leaf blade. They share design features like the rounded shape of the Colorado blade and the narrow-shaped Willow Leaf blade with an arched cross section between the two types. This blade is extremely flexible and able to accommodate the needs between two extreme offers by the Colorado and Willow Leaf blades. It is most preferred to be used on in-line spinners.

The Oklahoma Blade. This is actually a short rounded version of the Willow Leaf blade. It has other names like Olympic blade, turtleback blade or mag willow. The speed of rotation and vibration lay between the Indiana and Colorado blades. It is suitable for fishing in heavily pressured waters, where it is able to relay a sonic signal that may attract predatory fishes.

In terms of the overall spinnerbait configuration, there are two most common types of spinnerbaits which are the 'in-line spinner' and 'safety pin', aside from other types like the 'tail-spinner'.

The In-Line Spinner. The principle that works for this type of spinnerbait is the revolving of blades around a central axis or wire. The blades could be directly attached to the wire as well as the presence of a c-shaped piece of metal with holes in it to accommodate the wire.

The majority of in-line spinners are supported by metal weights fixed behind the spinning blades separated by beads or brass hardware to facilitate a frictionless spinning. It is the fact that spinning blades can cause the rotation of the whole bait hence it could create some twisted wire. This can be solved by the use of a swivel.

Safety Pin or Overhead Arm Spinnerbait. This "safety-pin" or overhead blade style spinnerbait is probably the most common used design among northern pike, bass and redfish anglers. Its prominent feature is indicated by the presence of a wire frame that is curved about 90º and inserted at its base in a bullet, cone, or arrowhead-shaped piece of lead with a single hook at the back.

The safety-pin spinnerbait makes it possible for the angler to cover the entire water column and make them able to retrieve the spinnerbait within view just under the water surface at a constant rate

Tail Spinner. This is a type of spinnerbait that includes a lead body with its line tie point on top, a single or treble hook on the bottom, plus a single small blade that is mounted on the tail. Hence the name is tail spinner, "Little George" tail spinner to be exact, introduced in the 1960s, which was the most well-known lure in this class
