Ancient Roman Swords - The Roman Spatha And Celtic Swords

The Roman Spatha Sword is a specific type of word with a Straight Blade and that has a Long Point. But, the Roman Calvary carried a slightly different version of them that had a rounded tip. The reason they used a rounded tip on their blade was so they didn't accidentely stab their comrades in arms when falling off their horse or even accidentely stab themselves. Because of the rounded tip this battle weapon was used primarily for slashing and cutting and was definitely not a thrusting or stabbing weapon.

The Roman Empire used these Ancient Roman Swords extensively until around 600 A.D. Other swords that were similar were used until around 1000 A.D. but were not exactly the same as the Spatha. The Celtic Sword was used before the Spatha and was used around 300 B.C. The Celtic was also known as the Iron Age Sword, since it was made from iron and not bronze. The became popular after the 8th century.

The Iron Swords of the Ancient past are much inferior to the steel swords that were produced later. They were forged and work hardened by an extensive hammering process. These weapons could potentially bend while being used. By adding some Carbon during the production process, Swordsmiths realized that they alloy could be improved. Nowdays this is known as the process of making steel.

Through Archaeology, many variations of the Spatha have been located in the countries of Britian and Germany. These weapons were used quite often by German Soldiers. The Spatha was a popular ancient sword that was used during the Migration Period. The Migration Period occured around 300 to 700 CE or Common Era. Or you can call it A.D. The Gladius was a shorter version of the Spatha and was about 3 feet in length. The Spatha was made to be worn on the left hand side of a soldier because of the extensive length of the blade.
