What is Spiritual Awakening? A Gnostic Answer
Awakening is regularly spoken of in spiritual circles, but its meaning is often unclear. This should come as little surprise since there are so many ways to look at the concept. Before examining the gnostic approach to spiritual awakening, here are a few definitions that are currently popular:
- An ecstatic personal encounter with a supernatural being or a special vision
- A state of bliss
- Letting go of attachments to the world, renouncing possessions or letting go of all desire
- Becoming aware of a spiritual dimension we haven't seen or understood before
- Connecting with inner knowledge or awareness
- Becoming one with God
- Being ‘born again'
Each of these definitions features an experience, an action or a new way of seeing things. We often think of a transition as ‘waking up,' from a previous state, but Jesus' gnostic followers thought of spiritual awakening in a more literal way. The first definition of awakening found in most dictionaries is "awaking from sleep." Obviously gnostic Christians weren't talking about waking up from the sleep experienced by the body. However, they were talking about waking up from a sleep even more profound, a sleep that has produced a terrifying nightmare.
If we need to wake up, why and how did we fall asleep? What are we waking up to? What is the dream we're experiencing? To answer these questions, we must first consider the gnostic view of life itself. Although Jesus and his followers were not aware of quantum physics, their view of life mirrors that of recent quantum discoveries. From the quantum perspective, consciousness is the only reality, the seat and origin of life. Everything in the material universe is the product of consciousness transforming energy into energy patterns that are interpreted by our senses to appear real. We say ‘appear' because quantum research tells us the material universe is a virtual reality, an illusion, a dream. This is exactly what spiritual masters like Jesus have said for centuries.
Gnostic Christians believed the everything in the universe sprang from the pure consciousness and energy of the Divine Source. But unlike a God that uses existing materials to create, Source created out of Self. As a result, everything in existence is part of the Divine, and shares Divine life and consciousness. This view is supported by quantum research, which demonstrates that everything came from a single conscious life source and is also permeated by that same life and consciousness. Research also indicates that although the material world appears to be made up of billions of separate forms, in reality everything is part of one indivisible, interconnected whole. The ancient sages have always claimed that this oneness is God, and now several physicists agree.
If our true identity is pure consciousness that dwells in indivisible oneness, why do we feel so certain we are a separate body? This is where the sleeping and dreaming of consciousness comes into play. Oneness is not sameness, and individuality exists within it, but in oneness all are equal. Since the Divine cannot consider one part of Self superior to another, oneness cannot contain specialness. To experience specialness, separation is necessary. Separation could not be literal or Source would be torn apart, but as the gnostic Creation of the World and the Alien Man points out, "Life is a dualistic scheme…a sleep, a drunkenness, an oblivion…our ignorance is a form of unconsciousness."
Consciousness can sleep and it can dream, and in that dream state anything can happen. However, dualism has a fatal flaw. Like the lottery, it creates a few special ‘winners' at the expense of a great many losers. Competition becomes the rule as we take what we desire from others. And that is why the gnostic Gospel of Truth describes our world as a dream gone wrong, a nightmare filled with terror:
"Thus they were ignorant of the Father, for they did not see him. Since there had been terror and confusion and uncertainty and doubt and division, there were many illusions among them and inane ignorance— as if they were fast asleep and found themselves a prey to nightmares. "
Our dream is so effective, the Gospel of Truth goes on to say, "In these dreams they are fleeing somewhere, or they cannot get away when chased, or they are in a fight…or it seems people are trying to kill them…or they are killing their neighbors and are covered with their blood." These dreams are an illusion that blind us to our true identity and separate us from the Divine. For Gnostic Christians, this dream of separation had nothing to do with sin but was equated with ignorance and a mistake that could be corrected at any time.
The Gospel of Truth assures us, "This continues until those experiencing all these dreams wake up…So it is with those who cast off ignorance from themselves like sleep…As they put [ignorance] aside like a dream in the night [they] understand the knowledge of the Father to be dawn…This is how a person acts while in ignorance, as if asleep, and this is how a person comes to knowledge, as if awakened."
From a gnostic perspective, spiritual awakening is a literal awakening from a profound sleep experienced by consciousness. It is a return from the dreamlike state that projects our material virtual reality to the fully awake consciousness we share with the One Mind of Source. We begin waking up by letting go of the desire for separation and specialness while growing in our desire to return to our true identity in oneness. The Gospel of Truth points out that our awakening is a return to the unity of oneness, "By means of knowledge they will purify themselves from multiplicity into unity, devouring matter within themselves like a fire, darkness by light, death by life…Good for one who comes to himself and awakens."
