Boston African American National Historic Site – A Historical Glimpse In To The African-American Struggle For Freedom

Home to the largest collection of structures owned by African American people, the Boston African American National Historic Site is indeed guaranteed to take you back into an era long past where African- American citizens had to struggle to gain their rights in society. This place features numerous schools, businesses, churches and houses that were once home to these people who were faced slavery and unequal rights. Situated on Boston’s Beacon Hill, this historic site focuses on bringing to life their struggle for independence by highlighting the political, educational and social aspects that shaped their lives.

Explore 15 significant and historic structures at the site by making your way through the 1.5 mile Black Heritage Trail. Along the way, you will pass by many schools such as the city’s first mixed school known as Phillips School, and the African School started by African American parents in response to their children being denied access to a public school. Visitors can enjoy the unique interactive displays featured at the Abiel Smith School that is home to the Museum of African American History.

Amid the many structures, there are several 19th century houses where African American Boston citizens had once resided. One of the more famous homes is the ancient George Middleton House and the Lewis and Harriet Hayden House where an escaped slave was living with his wife. Legend says that the couple stored gunpowder at the front entrance of the house to scare off slave hunters. When slave hunters came, it is said that they opened the door with candles declaring that they would rather blow up the house than be bound as a slave.

An impressive and famous monument that stands for the Massachusetts 54th regiment can be seen at the Boston African American National Historic Site. It commemorates the first African American regiment that marched in battle for the Civil War. The 18th century church called the African Meeting House can also be viewed in its ancient splendour. It was America’s first African-American church that still stands as a symbolic representation of the past.

For history lovers, the Boston African American National Historic Site is a true gem to be visited amidst other popular Boston attractions. Travellers looking for elegant and comfortable Boston hotels from which to explore the city can stay at the Langham Hotel Boston. This contemporary hotel is a great base for relaxation for both business and leisure travellers alike.
